# How often to water new grass seed

Until the seed sprouts, keep the top inch of soil constantly moist with light watering once or twice a day (two or three times in hot, sunny spots). When the seedlings are about an inch tall, water every other day with about ¼ inch, then every third day with ½ inch, and after that about 1 inch every 5–7 days.

## Week-by-week schedule

| Stage | How often | How much |
| Seeding to germination (1–3 weeks) | 1–2 times a day; 2–3 in heat or full sun | Just enough to keep the top inch damp — no puddles |
| Seedlings about 1 inch tall | Every other day | About ¼ inch |
| Second week after germination | Every third day | About ½ inch |
| After 2–3 mowings | Every 5–7 days | About 1 inch |

The step-down comes from Kansas State Research and Extension ([Kansas State Research and Extension — Watering New Lawns (MF2802)](https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/download/watering-new-lawns_MF2802)). Seed sitting in dry soil for even a day can stop germinating for good, which is why the first weeks need frequent light watering. Use a gentle spray so you don't wash the seed into piles, and water in the morning rather than the evening ([WVU Extension — new lawn maintenance](https://extension.wvu.edu/lawn-gardening-pests/lawn/new-lawn-maintenance)).

## When to seed under watering restrictions

- Seed in the cool season — fall for cool-season grasses, late spring for warm-season ones — when evaporation is low and fewer waterings keep the seedbed moist.

- Use the hand-watering exception. Most cities only restrict sprinklers; a hand-held hose with a shut-off nozzle is allowed any day in Austin, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Dallas and Fort Worth. That is often enough for a small overseeded area.

- Ask before seeding a whole lawn. Several utilities treat seed like sod and only allow extra watering with an exception or variance:

| Where | New sod / seed rule |
| [Tampa](/tampa/) | Follow the 30-day establishment schedule, any day of the week, but still never between 4 a.m. and 8 p.m. After 30 days, back to your one day a week. ([City of Tampa — Watering Days and Hours](https://www.tampa.gov/water/conservation/watering-days-and-hours)) |
| [Hillsborough County](/hillsborough-county/) (unincorporated) | Days 1–30: any day, during allowed hours (midnight–4 a.m., 8 p.m.–midnight). Days 31–60: even addresses Tue/Thu/Sun, odd addresses Mon/Wed/Sat. The zone must be at least 50% new plants. ([Hillsborough County — Find My Watering Days & Times](https://hcfl.gov/residents/property-owners-and-renters/water-and-sewer/find-my-watering-days-and-times)) |
| [Las Vegas](/las-vegas/) (LVVWD) | Daily watering for up to 14 days, once per calendar year — call 702-822-8571 before planting so it is noted on your account. ([LVVWD — watering days & group](https://www.lvvwd.com/conservation/mandatory-watering-schedule/index.html)) |
| [San Antonio](/san-antonio/) (SAWS) | Only by variance, and mainly for new construction: up to five weeks of Monday–Friday watering in stage hours. Re-sodding an existing lawn does not qualify. Apply before you install. ([SAWS — New Landscape Variance Request](https://www.saws.org/conservation/drought-restrictions/variance-requests/landscape-variance/)) |
| [Austin](/austin/) | Only through an approved watering variance for a new landscape, applied for in the Austin Water Customer Portal; keep to your normal days until it is approved. ([Austin Water — Watering Variances FAQ](https://www.AustinTexas.gov/sites/default/files/files/Water/Conservation/Variances/Watering-Variances_FAQ_v2023.08.18.pdf)) |
| [Dallas](/dallas/), [Fort Worth](/fort-worth/), [Los Angeles](/los-angeles/) | No automatic new-lawn exception is published on the pages we track. Hand watering with a hose is allowed in Dallas and Fort Worth at any time, and in Los Angeles before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. — the practical way to keep new seed or sod moist. Ask your utility before installing a large area. |
| Northeast & Central Florida (SJRWMD) | New landscape may be watered any day for 30 days, then every other day for 30 days (one 60-day period). During the current Phase III shortage: daily for 15 days, up to 3 days a week for 30 days, then 2 days a week for 15 days.
